Vinyl Revival?

Vinyl Revival

Is Vinyl making a secret comeback?

YES!

When Serato came along, everyone finally thought vinyl was going to die out.  I am happily glad they were wrong.  Hipsters have fallen for vinyl’s old-school coolness, and vinyl record sales have jumped recently. Ah, Hipsters.  What would we do with out you?

Vinyl records have long held a special place in many peoples hearts.  The soft, warm sound they produce will always be more pleasant than cold, boring MP3s.  Vinyl’s collectible aspect is also a big plus.  Collecting MP3s is pretty lame.  Showing off your MP3 collection to someone is likely to put them to sleep.  But stepping into your Vinyl library and exploring 2,000 different colorful records is much more fun.

It’s also nice to be able to hold the record in your hands, appreciate the album art, and pop it on the ol’ Technics SL-1210 M5G.  I will never get rid of my vinyl collection, and I know I’m not the only one.

  1. Long live vinyl! MP3s are for kids.

    1. Vinyl has been on the upswing for a while–ironic that MP3s are actually helping vinyl sales AND killing the shiny disc at the same time. Does any body still DJ with the shiny disc? I do–but I find it’s often just a storage medium for the MP3s.

  2. High quality MP3′s have their place.  I love vinyl too, but I can’t carry 3 boxes of vinyl to each gig!  :)

  3. Big up all vinyl lovers, at liquorice pizza we through some of the heaviest ‘vinyl only’ warehouse parties whenever possible!

    long live vinyl

    1. I agree I’m now since a sporting accident unable to carry lots of vynil altough I love and grew up DJing on vynil doing my own remixes with 2 7″ 45′s. I now use Vurtual DJ with a wireless mouse and I am able to make my computer sound like ecords by still being able to improvise music and scratching. I now have a 300 Gig Hard drive with over 100,000 songs all timed as well. So for less hassel using a computer I know is going against the grain but I now can do a true all request all night by having over 100,000 songs timed and easily mixed on Virtual DJ which I find is the best I’ve used BPM studio, PCDJ Red and PCDJ FX. But they are not nearly as usible in freestyle mixing as Virtual DJ, with effects and all…

  6. vinyl rules…….keep the old style alivegr

  7. there is olnly one bad thing about vinyl and that is ……………….. the wieght:) :) :):):):)
one love the big V thats VINYL to the mp3 peoplethere is only one thing to use for proper mixing and thats vinyl would u agree

  8. In the end there will only be one shure way to sample and mix music, with two turntables and vinyl.

  9. I still lug my Technics turntables to any nightclub that doesn’t have their own REAL turntables. It seems a damn shame that there are so many DJs that only use the WHEELS of Plastic (CDJs) cause less and less nightclubs now have their own turntables. I find only the legit larger clubs still carry both Technics turntables and CDJs. I now use Serato with the Vinyl control Records cause it’s as close to the Real feel of Deejaying with Vinyl as you can get. I switched from all Vinyl about 3 years ago. My Vinyl collection is at about 30,000 Vinyl Records and I too used to lug around about 8 crates to each gig. Now that I travel more often for gigs te convenience of having 17,000+ songs on a laptop make things more convenient. I still can do beat jugles better on real vinyl but I do like the extra capabilities Serato offers like Beat rolls, Looping and the ability to pre create a few of my own edits and remixes. I still do a ton of remixing on the fly using Acappellas as I did when I was using real Vinyl but Serato has opened the door to do a few remixes that are only possible using the pitch lock feature and a few other features. People would laugh if I had tried to throw PLO style over Michael Jackson’s “Bad” years ago cause Method Man would have sounded like a chipmunk. LOL.

I think lately I’ve simply traded lugging crates for lugging around Turntables and my Pioneer 909 mixer, so I still get my exercise. LOL. I find many of these nightclubs need to stop hiring cookie cutter DJs. I’ve actually nearly given up on my own town and focus more on touring or on throwing my own parties, cause I’ve only recently found Two nightclubs that actually recognize talent and real DJ and Crowd moving skills. It seems like no one else takes the time to watch and listen… even when the patrons themselves take the time to ALL say damn that’s the best DJ we’ve heard where did you find him? When they don’t listen and instead hire based on price they usually close within a few months… Oh well lesson learned right?

    Long Live Vinyl…

  10. PS: I just tweeted this article for ya, I forgot to tell you, I also bought your club guide and while I already had a press kit, professional photos, demos etc.. there were still many great ideas in your guide that I have recently started implementing. Your guide also helped me out with my girlfriend who for a while didn’t understand why I was handing out over thousands of Mixtape CDs to everyone everywhere I went especially at the airport whenevr I travel, since those go to many different cities, and at all my shows. Once I purchased you guide and showed her that someone else was saying that handing out Mixtapes is one of the major strategies to help create a huge following and a fan base. That portion of your guide helped support my own reasoning and my past efforts. Thanks.
