Poll: What Music Medium do You Use?

DJ Music Medium

We all have our favorite way to play music. I want to know what is the most popular right now.  I know many of you probably use more than one type, but let me know which music medium you use the most.

Times are changing fast. Are DJs changing with them?

  1. Hey, great stuff with the blog!
Think this poll needs a little more multiple options though.

Also, what do you consider Serato? Digital Vinyl?

    1. Ah, good point. I guess it’s a bit of both. I’ll have to add it to a future poll. :)

  2. Would love to use vinyl more, but Serato has made overseas shit so much easier!

  3. I think that serato should be taken off the market, anybody including my seven year old daughter, can become a dj with serato..that program takes away so much, from what we love to do..to top it off there is nothing original about it .all serato dj,s sound the same..there is no signiture sound, what happened to being original, what happened to having you own sound,,why would you wanna sound like everybody out there.are there any dj,s left out there that can actually play music with out serato..thats a good ? Shit i feel im the only no serato dj out there..what ever happened to real talent, what ever happened to useing your ears to beat match, now all you have to do is stare at a computer monitor to do that…thats no talent..Sorry if i offened anyone..but im 36 years old ive been doing this since the age of 13,and i still prefer to do it the old way,the way it origanated,,with, vinal, and cd,s..thats how i rock..Ill take on any challenge from any serato dj,with out there serato,of couse, why with out it,because it gives you the .advantage,i wanna see how good you play with out it..half you serato dj,s cant function with out your laptop..what do you do if your laptop goes out or crashes, then what..then theparty is over.yu see i can learn serato in 2-3 hours but can a serato dj learn what has taken me years of practice..thats another good ?

    1. ok man! much respect for starting out vinyl. which is cool i did two. but serato does not make a dj sound any different. the main reason djs switched to serato and other dj software is so that you can carry your whole music collection without having to take pounds and pounds of heavy record crates around. serato does not make you a good dj. every dj still has there own style no matter what they use. i used to feel the same way about djs using cds because im a vinyl guy but hey every dj does there thing different. so thats not fair to call a dj using serato a fake dj. if you do that your dissing some of the best djs in the game like dj jazzy jeff etc.

  4. oh yea just to prove my point with the above statements,,you guys said it yur selves,,its much easyer,,why would you want to make something you love so much easyer…i dont understand that

  5. i can agree with alan there…i love the fact that you have to use youre skill and know how to beat match…yes its hard but the feeling that you get from knowing you have just mixed two tracks together is amazing!!!…

  6. Unfortunately Serato won’t be going anywhere, so we’ll all have to adapt. When competition increases from all the new digital DJs, it will force you to improve your skills to set yourself apart from them. Many old school professional jocks have made the switch, but you can bet they still drop the hard-to-find classic tracks on vinyl. You can also bet they are still buying up vinyl for their personal collection.

But people who don’t adapt to change in their industry usually become obsolete eventually, which is why we had to bail out the US auto industry. :)

  7. hmmmm… I have been DJing for 27 years now. I mixed on 4 turntables at one time. Play record backward and won many beatmixing DJ competitions. I use Traktor with 4 tracks and 2 Eks Otus as controller and yes the SYNC part of mixing is a no brainer…but still you still need to know WHERE to mix, how to use affect, how to use volume and parts of other songs to be creative. If beatmixing is all you take pride in doing when mixing well you’ve got a long way to go. What technology did was make the DJ REAL artists because no two DJ mixes the SAME song exactly alike. Give a list of 10 song to 100 DJs force them to mix then in the exact same order and they will ALL be different from CREATIVE DJ but boring as hell from strict beat mixers.

I still mix records and have my original 2 grey SL1200s from the 80 with Shure SC35. They will be baried with me but am so much better as an ARTIST with the new DJ software.

  8. Serato baby !!!! U can’t beat it.

  9. Serato is great Dj Scribble uses it Mix Master Mike,Jazzy Jeff they all have different sounds and styles, i love serato I started out on Vinyl, and then cds, Now serato, I do not miss carrying in tons of records and cds. and on trips having to pay extra to fly your records, or not being able to fit stuff in your car cause you got to many records to transport. just like cars everything gets better with time.

  10. I agree with everyone’s view regarding Serato, and previous methods. However, I believe it depend’s upon your preference mainly. I never played out with vinyl. I mainly used cd’s, and have been using Virtual Dj for the past 2-years. I prefer VDJ simply because I see it has certain advantages over Serato. I am not too sure about the glitches with Microsoft software, however, use what is comfortable for you, and enhances your mixing style. I am still thinking if I should switch to Serato. I just hate the fact of being like everyone else……because no one can say Serato is the Best…..it’s all matter of opinion….

  11. Serato is a GREAT software especially for scratcher. I go to the WMC Miami every year and 70% of the DJs I have seen use Serato the rest uses Traktor et I saw one guy use VirtualDJ (told me he was changing to Serato). If you go to the European countries its a little different…its Traktor then VirtualDJ then Serato. I have a Mac book Pro and an iMac and have Traktor synced together so it is like playing with 8 tracks (still needs adjustment on the midi side for cue points). I want to buy and try Serato to see the differene between Serato and Traktor. Until then I can’t give an objective opinion on Serato.

Here is a list of DJs using Traktor…. Richie Hawtin, BT, Deadmau5, Pete Tong, Dubfire, James Zabiela, Carl Cox (one of the oldest DJ on the professional scene), Grandmaster Flash. DJ Rafik and this is only to name some of the most well known DJs. If you look at the list of Known DJs for Serato, most are scratcher….so I think you need to determine WHAT sector you want to mix in and use the appropriate software.

Just a side note. Last year at the WMC I talked to about 200+ DJs and producerds and found that 95% of them were using Macs Logic Studio…All those that were using Pro Tools were changing to Logic Studio and found one or two that was using FL Studio, Reason or Cubase. I myself have Logic, Cubase, FL Studio and Pro tools and do prefer Logic Studio for its simplicity and performance and its FAR cheaper then Pro Tools.

    my 2 cents

  12. Well with Srato you need other equipment plus your computer. With Virtual DJ it has it all with effects on your computer and you can mix Video too with transition effects with speed adjustment to bar mix. So I think as most do “Virtual DJ” is the best to use in these situations (Digital Music) I’ve used PCDJ Red & MX BPM studion and I find that Virtual DJ is the most versitile computer program that has it all. All my music is also programed in Virtual DJ so it also has all the BPM’s for the songs listed too forthe old fashioned DJ’s who still use BPM’s. Also some new DJ’s say they just use thier ear Bullshit. you can not list in your head a thousand songs and know which one mixes with theothers. Using a Mixing Book catalogue free’s up your brain for creativly putting all types of music together..
